Dedication or craziness: winter cycling

Dedication or Craziness?!?!

This morning as I was waiting for the bus, I saw someone riding down the sidewalk and thought to myself, is this just craziness? It's currently -17C (0F) and with the wind -25C (-13F) and on top of that it's snowing and slippery outside. Again is this just craziness or dedication? I had posted about a week ago regarding a bicycle that I had noticed outside a gym where I play volleyball and though, this is just ridiculous, and again this morning I see another cyclist riding down the street with his white toque. Some people just surprise me, and it just happened to be my caption for today.

  1. crazy. and selfish.
last week, saw a cyclist slip a little between cars on Richmond Rd (in westboro). the car in front of me swerved a little, the oncoming swerved a little too. it was very manageable, but unnecessarily dangerous.
Sometimes we have to acknowledge that the city is simply not set up for 24/7 cycling all seasons. We can't even plough the roads on time!

I also think cyclists get off too east, with many not even thinking about using the hand gestures to imply their planned movement.

  2. You make a lot of valid points Nelly. At least this rider was on the sidewalk this morning, even though I usually critique cyclist for being on the sidewalk as it's a pedestrian zone, not a cycling area. However, for the safety of most, it's much safer for everyone if they avoid snowy roads with cars on them. Your point about this town not being set-up for 24/7 365 a year is very true, this town isn't set up for that! However, not much we can do, as one side of me commends the people who cycle, as they are helping reduce pollution, etc, doing some exercise, etc, but on the other hand there's the safety of others and where do we draw the line?
